Trip through Torino, Genova, Milano

A few videos and photos from the trip to Turin, Genoa, Milan, taken in Italy and Switzerland.

This was the longest trip during this holiday in Germany. It has taken 18 hours, during which 1200 km or 750 miles was covered, with full crossing of the Swiss and Italian Alps in two different places.

We left at 8 on Saturday morning and went down to Turin via the Swiss town of Vevey, on the Lake of Geneva, from where we began crossing Alps by first driving down motorway 9 (E62), then down the highway 21 towards Aosta, then down to Turin via the town of Ivrea, by going through multiple tunnels and semi tunnels.

Torino - Genoa - Milano On this trip one comes across a lot of tiny Alpine settlements like this. The picture of this one was taken nearby the town of Vevey.

Torino - Genoa - Milano According to my GPS Test the height on this spot is 1200 metres or ~3700 feet above the sea level. The highest point we got to, while crossing the Alps, was around 2K in metres or ~6K in feet.

Torino - Genoa - Milano This is what I call a semi tunnel. In modern Alps these span for very long distances, and help to keep the road surface free from snow and ice.

At the same time they allow the passers by to enjoy stunning views of the Alpine landscapes, and I understand they are much safer than the fully enclosed tunnels.

Torino - Genoa - Milano You've got to see these landscapes with your own eyes. Very beautiful.

Torino - Genoa - Milano This castle probably dates back to medieval times.

When crossing the Swiss - Italian border, you will have to stop, not however by the border guards (you simply don't see them), but by the guard that takes payment for using the tunnels, and then, when you enter the Italian motorway, you pull a ticket, and later, when you go off the motorway, you insert the ticket and the machine will tell you how much you have to pay.

For the use of the tunnels and the motorway between the border and Turin, we paid in total 32 Euros.

After crossing the Swiss - Italian border we went down the motorway E27.

Torino - Genoa - Milano The Turin city centre gives an impression of a very ancient city. Turin is more than 2K years old.

The Giuseppe Garibaldi monument.

From Turin to Genoa we went down motorway. For this segment of the motorway we paid 17 Euros, which tells me that the price is approximately 0.10 Euro per kilometre or 0.06 Euros per mile.

We got to Genoa around 5 pm.

Torino - Genoa - Milano As it was already too late, we could not get inside of the Neptune replica.

Torino - Genoa - Milano This is a replica of the Spanish galleon, Neptune, that is on the Mediterranean coast.

Luzana The price for visiting the galleon Neptun is around six Euros.

Luzana Genoa is also a very old city, and is full of such narrow streets. It looks like that at least these days the city is not very well looked after.

From Genoa we left for Milan already passt the midnight and went down the local roads in order to better discover Italian countryside as well as to safe money on the tolls and because we had plenty of time to get to Milan.

The local roads that we were driving from Genoa to Milan, are simply terrible.
They are best probably for extracting your teeth than anything else. Inside the car, everything that is not well fixed is shaking like mad.
Closer to Milan the road somewhat improved but if you would compare it to such a road in Switzerland, Germany or northern Europe, than those are way better and cleaner.

Italian local roads I did not back up my dash cam and did not take picture of the state of those roads, I got the picture from the Google Street View of such a road, and the Google says that this picture was taken in March of this year.

Around 3 am I decided to have a few hours sleep and parked near MacDonald in the large parking area on the outskirts of the town of Binasco.

Here is an 11 minute video of the trip from the small town of Rozzano to the centre of Milan (this whole video will take 500 MB of you data allowance if you have limited internet):

Milano We parked in the centre of Milan around 10 am. It was Sunday, and we were witnessing a parade of the Alpini from all over the world.

Milano Every year the Alpini march through different Italian cities, and this year, this was the 92nd National Alpini Assembly on the centenary of the foundation of the National Alpini Association in the Lombard capital, Milan, that took place on the 8th of July 1919.

After visiting Milan we went back to our village of Herrischried, but this time we were crossing the Alps near the city of Como.

From Milan to Como we were using also the local roads, popped up to the Carrefour supermarket (French chain) and had stopped quite a few times to enjoy the views while crossing the Alps.

Lago di Como After driving for about half an hour we did find a perfect spot to enjoy the view of the town of Como and the Lake of Como, or as Italians call it, Lago di Como, and sometimes Lario.

This is a short video that when we were crossing the border between Italy and Switzerland. No Tramp walls, as you see :), and you don't even have to stop. (2 minutes, 70 MB):

The first video from my dash cam of the trip through Switzerland, by driving down the Swiss motorways through the Italian speaking canton of Ticino. (video: 12 minutes, 700 MB):

The second video of the trip through Switzerland, through the canton of Uri (16 minutes, 800 MB):

Lago dei Quattro Cantoni We had stopped a few times as you will see in the next video, to enjoy the views and to take some pictures. This is the lake of Four Settlements (The Lake of Lucerne), or as German speakers call it, Vierwaldstättersee.

Vierwaldstättersee Stunning views of the Lake of Lucerne

Lake Lucerne The Lake of Lucerne while crossing the Alps

The third, and the last video of the trip through Switzerland, by the Lake of Lucerne, and in the end you can also see the border crossing between Switzerland and Germany. I like this video the most, (20 minutes, 1.1 GB):
